About the free market bag crochet pattern

On the Go Market Bag Crochet Pattern Free shown filled with fruit

I hate to admit it, but I have an abundance of plastic bags from the grocery store and just about every other store out there. I try to reuse and repurpose them, I have even crocheted some into mats for the homeless, but it seems that no matter what I do they keep stacking up!

I have a few of the reusable bags you can purchase at the local store for around $1, but it seems that the handles break way to easily.

I decided it was time to do something about it, so I set out to crochet some market bags, an accessory that I would be proud to carry and wouldn’t take up a ton of space.

You can try the On the Go Market Bag crochet pattern free, it’s the perfect market bag to replace those ugly plastic store bags.

This crochet bag, made with Caron Cotton Cakes is soft and strong, yet can be folded up to fit into small spaces like your car door or glove box.

If your city is anything like mine, Fresh Markets are starting to pop up around town with the warmer weather. Some of the booths offer plastic bags for your purchases, but most don’t.

I look forward to using these crochet market bags for my future shopping trips knowing that I will be supporting local farmers and being kind to the environment at the same time.

You don’t have to limit the use of reusable crochet bags to just markets and groceries. They are great for all shopping needs, lake time, pool time, and so much more! I was able to fit 10 full size skeins of yarn into one bag!

  1. Hi Carol
Just wanting to say hi. I hadn’t done any crochet for the last 40 years concentrating on knitting instead. I am 68 years old this year and have been crocheting blankets and throws for the last 2 years. I have a few health issues so I don’t go out much.
Plastic bags have been banned in Australia this year so I thought I would look fo bag patterns to make and possibly sell. This is how I came upon your pattern. Not sure when I will start as I have a couple of rugs on the ga at the moment.
    Keep the patterns coming.
    Regards
    Sue

    1. Hi Sue!
I am so glad you found me! I love that you are getting back into crochet. I also knit, and I try to toggle between the two to keep my brain engaged with the different stitches and motions. Blankets are so much fun and rewarding to make. I love to make them for family and friends. I hope you enjoy making this bag pattern. It is one of my favorites.

  2. Hi! I am loving making this bag. I am using mandala ombré and this yarn is just so nice and soft.

I have a question about the pattern. I am on rounds 33-35. Round 33 is a repeat of round 13, but I don’t have a ch5 to SC into. Should I just skip 5?

My last round was SC all around.. please let me know!

Thank you so much this is my second actual project that I’ll be gifting someone.

    1. Hello Katrina!
Round 32 is a repeat of Round 17 which has the ch-5 spaces in it. Round 33 will be the repeat of Round 13 which will work into the ch-5 spaces of round 32. Please let me know if you have any other questions I can answer.
