About the Dempsey the crochet duck free pattern
Attention Duck Lovers! Another Adorable crochet duck free pattern is here!
April 25th 2024 is National Amigurumi Day! If you love to crochet these cute stuffed creatures, today is all about you!
Last week I released the crochet pattern for a small yellow crochet duck named Dizzy. After creating the Dizzy the Duck crochet pattern I had to try and make a larger version with super chunky, cuddly soft yarn. The result is Dempsy the Duck. While these two rubber ducks look similar, the plush duck patterns are NOT the same for both versions.
What is gauge and why does it matter?
Gauge is the measurement of a specific number of stitches per inch and specific number of rows per inch when using a specific yarn weight and hook size.
While many times you can adjust the hook size and yarn weight size and get a relatively close completed project to the original design it isn't always the case.
For example, Dizzy the Crochet Duck has a gauge of 5 stitches and 6 rows in 1" x 1" square, while Dempsy the Duck has a gauge of 4 stitches and 3 rows in a 1" x 1" square.
Because the Ratio of Stitches to Rows does not match, the completed item will be completely disproportional. In the case of Dempsy, you will end up with a large head on a small body.
Not wanting to leave my bulky yarn friends out on a great duck pattern I set out to create a new pattern that gives you a plush duck that is relatively the size of a young life sized duck. You can find the free and easy amigurumi tutorial for Dempsy the Crochet Duck below and Dizzy the Duck here.

The entire body of the duck is worked in one piece from the top of the head down. The bill and wings are worked separately and sewn onto the body.

Place wings on either side of the body. I like to hold mine in place with straight pins to make sure they are even. Using the tail of the wing, sew the wing to the body. I kept the tips of the wings unattached for a “ruffled feathers” look on the tips.
If desired use embroidery floss and a needle to add some details around the eyes. I did 2 lines coming from below the eye.
